On November 23rd, the Christmas lights of Barcelona were lit, marking the start of the much-awaited festivities. Hotel Regina, situated in the heart of the city, positions itself as the perfect accommodation to immerse oneself in the magic, thanks to its proximity to all the city's highlights.

The lighting, which will last until January 6th, features over 4 kilometers of lights adorning the streets and squares, with Paseo de Gràcia, celebrating its bicentennial, as the focal point of this luminous spectacle. Don't want to miss out on anything? Then take note, as there's plenty of Barcelona to explore.

1. A luminous setting: The Barcelona Christmas Festival

Barcelona at Christmas is a different story. Forget about giant trees or light competitions; here the city shines with its own style. The Christmas Festival will take place from December 16th to 29th with over 300 activities. Passeig de Gràcia and Plaza de Catalunya become the backdrop for a spectacle of lights and music, while Plaza Universitat surprises us this year with a cutting-edge audiovisual installation projecting lasers into the sky, creating a spectacle visible from every corner of Barcelona. You can check out the full program here.

2. Plaza de Felip Neri: lights with history

In your Christmas journey, you can't miss one of Barcelona's best-kept secrets, the small and charming Plaza de Felip Neri. Hidden in the Gothic Quarter, it's a place of peace and reflection. Its history is poignant: during the Spanish Civil War, it was bombed, leaving marks on the Church of San Felipe Neri and claiming many lives. Today, illuminated by Christmas lights, this square is a silent testimony to the history and resilience of Barcelona.

3. A street illuminated for the first time

For the first time, Passeig Sant Joan will be adorned with Christmas lights. The Brosmind studio from Barcelona has been tasked with designing this new lighting, which will last for three years. Inspired by the world of manga, Kawaii comics, and Chinese culture, the design includes Christmas messages in comic windows and traditional Christmas symbols. It's created to be enjoyed by both pedestrians and drivers, offering different perspectives for residents and visitors alike.

4. Modernism and Christmas lights

Catalan Modernism lovers, this Christmas plan has everything you're looking for. The event 'Els llums de Sant Pau' at the Sant Pau complex is a must-see. Designed for the whole family, the route features audiovisual installations where light is the star, offering a varied and creative experience. This year, as a novelty, an ice rink is included. Last year, the event attracted over 210 thousand visitors, not only for its spectacle but also for its location in the Sant Pau Modernist complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From December 24th to January 14th.

5. A special bus to tour the city at night enjoying the Christmas lights

Since its debut in 2019, the Barcelona Night Tour Christmas Lights has been a success and returns for Christmas 2023. This adapted tourist bus offers a stunning tour of Barcelona's Christmas lights, passing through main streets and iconic places such as Passeig de Gràcia, Sagrada Familia, Arc de Triomf, and, for the first time, Passeig Sant Joan. With four daily departures, two at 6:30 p.m. and two at 8:30 p.m. from Plaza Catalunya, the tour includes explanations in Catalan, Spanish, and English. Reservations are available on the Barcelona Christmas Tour web.
